The Songs He Sang

Molly Malone: Lyrics

As performed by Cisco Houston

James Yorkston

Appears on:
In Dublin's fair city,
where the girls are so pretty
There lived my Molly, sweet Molly Malone
And she wheeled her wheelbarrow
   through streets wide and narrow
Singing "Cockles and mussles alive, alive-o"

Alive, alive-o, alive, alive-o, alive, alive-o
And she wheeled her wheelbarrow
through the streets wide and narrow
Singing "Cockles and mussles alive, alive-o"

She was a fishmonger,
and sure it t'was no wonder
For so were her mother and father before
And they wheeled their wheelbarrows,
   through streets wide and narrow
Singing "Cockles and mussles alive, alive-o"

Alive, alive-o, alive, alive-o, alive, alive-o
And they wheeled their wheelbarrows
through the streets wide and narrow
Singing "Cockles and mussles alive, alive, alive-o"

She then took the fever
   and none could relieve her
And died my Molly, sweet Molly Malone
Now her ghost wheels that barrow
  through streets wide and narrow
Singing "Cockles and mussles alive, alive-o"

Alive, alive-o, alive, alive-o, alive, alive-o
Now her ghost wheels that barrow
  through streets wide and narrow
Singing "Cockles and mussles alive, alive-o"

Of note:

Cisco's phony Irish accent is kept to a minimum, making this almost tolerable, but the potency and power that he uses to elevate lame songs to art is missing on this one.
